What Is Coachella? Your Ultimate Guide – From the desk of a 30-something-year-old millennial who has attended Coachella more times than she can count, packed the wrong shoes at least twice, and yet somehow keeps buying the pass.
Let me be honest with you: I have never once arrived at Coachella with a solid plan. And somehow, every single year, it works out anyway. That’s the magic of this festival – and also, a little bit, the chaos. I’ve made it back several years with a rotating cast of whoever could get their act together enough to buy a pass, clear their calendar, and commit to a long weekend in the California desert. The crew changes. The outfits are always planned. The energy is always unhinged in the best possible way.
This year I’m sitting it out – which is genuinely tragic considering the Biebs is headlining – but I’ve been going long enough to know exactly what makes a Coachella trip extraordinary. If you’re asking yourself, “But what is Coachella?” and whether it lives up to the hype, yes – it does. Emphatically yes. Here is everything you need to know, from the basics to the insider stuff, plus a few ways to make the most of your time in Southern California while you’re at it.
What is Coachella?
So – what is Coachella, exactly? Officially, it’s the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival: the largest, most iconic music and arts festival in the United States. It’s a complete and total sensory takeover for two consecutive weekends every April. Eight stages. Hundreds of artists spanning rock, pop, hip hop, EDM, Latin, indie, and everything in between. Art installations the size of buildings. Fashion that exists nowhere else on earth (…I mean it. NOWHERE else). And a collective energy that is genuinely impossible to describe to someone who hasn’t felt it.
The Coachella Festival has been running since 1999 and has been headlined by everyone from Beyoncé to Radiohead to Prince to Daft Punk. In 2025, the lineup brought Lady Gaga, Green Day, Post Malone, and Travis Scott to the desert – with 335+ artists across six days. For 2026, the headliners are Sabrina Carpenter, Justin Bieber, and Karol G, who will make history as the first Latina artist to headline the festival (!!!). The lineup sold out within a week of announcement. Because of course it did.
One of my personal Coachella highs was being in the crowd for Chappell Roan’s debut set in 2024 and realizing, in real time, that this was about to become one of those Coachella moments. The energy was completely off the charts, and you could feel the shift happening halfway through the set. That’s what Coachella does so well: it doesn’t just showcase artists, it turns casual listeners into full blown converts.
Case in point: 2025, when I saw The Beaches live for the first time and they unexpectedly brought out my forever favorite powerhouse drummer/singer combo, G Flip. If you know me, this mention was inevitable. I’ve flown to other continents for G’s shows, so seeing them pop up unexpectedly at Coachella was basically the highlight of my weekend (…if you’re not already listening to G Flip, this is your cue…)
Where is Coachella?
Coachella takes place at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California – about 130 miles east of Los Angeles, smack in the middle of the Coachella Valley. If you’ve ever wondered exactly where Coachella, California is, picture this: the Colorado Desert, framed dramatically by the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto mountain ranges, with a sky so wide it genuinely doesn’t look real. The IDEAL setting for an epic music festival.
Getting there from LA takes about 2 to 2.5 hours – longer on festival weekends when the entire I-10 becomes a very slow, very vibes-filled parking lot. Plan accordingly.
Coachella Location at a Glance:
- Venue: Empire Polo Club
- Address: 81800 Avenue 51, Indio, CA 92201
- Region: Coachella Valley, California
- Distance from LA: 130 miles / approx. 2 – 2.5 hours
When is Coachella? Coachella Dates & Schedule
Coachella runs over two consecutive weekends each April.
The Coachella schedule drops a few weeks before the festival – all eight stages, all six days, set times starting around 1 PM Pacific and running deep into the night. The lineup is typically announced in January and the app is your best friend for building out your days, setting reminders, and inevitably abandoning your entire plan the moment you walk through the gates.
Speaking from experience: build in blank space. Some of the best Coachella moments I’ve had were completely unplanned — stumbling into a set I’d never heard of, wandering into an art installation at golden hour, ending up somewhere I definitely didn’t intend to be. That’s the good stuff.
The Festival Itself: What to Expect
If you’ve never been to Coachella, here’s what the experience actually looks like on the ground.
The Stages
Coachella runs eight stages simultaneously, which means you will have conflicts and you will have to make choices and some of them will haunt you. The main Coachella Stage is the crown jewel – massive production, headliners, the sets people talk about for years. The Outdoor Theatre is slightly more intimate but still enormous. The Sahara Tent is where electronic music lives and it is an absolute party at all times. The Mojave Tent leans indie and rock. The Yuma and Sonora tents are tucked away, air conditioned (and the kind of discovery that makes you feel like you’re in on a secret…)
The Art
People genuinely sleep on the art at Coachella and they shouldn’t. The large scale installations spread across the grounds are genuinely extraordinary – sculpture, light, interactive pieces, things you can walk through and climb on and photograph and stand in front of at sunset feeling very much like you are living your best life.
The Food & Drinks
Coachella’s food situation has leveled up significantly over the years. There are chef driven concepts, regional staples, international food, late-night snacks, and enough beverage options to fuel whatever energy level you’re operating at. Hydration is not optional – the desert heat is no joke and it will humble you. Trust me on this one.
The Fashion
Coachella fashion is its own universe. Some people plan full looks months in advance. The desert has a way of making everything look better, anyway.
Bikes and Hikes LA: The Best Way to Experience the Outdoors Around LA and the Desert
Here’s where we come in (you knew it was coming!). Bikes and Hikes LA has been running guided outdoor adventures across Southern California for years – Hollywood Sign tours, epic bike tours, and custom group experiences right IN the Coachella Valley. If you’re in town for Coachella and want to add something genuinely memorable to your trip, Bikes and Hikes LA is the move.
What Bikes and Hikes LA offers:
- Daily Hiking and Walking Tours – Expertly guided hiking tours to the Hollywood Sign and through Griffith Park.
- Daily Bike Tours – Scenic guided rides through Los Angeles.
- Group Adventures – Custom experiences for corporate groups, bachelorette parties, destination events, and more
- Private Tours – Fully tailored itineraries for individuals or small groups
- Got a Group? Take It to the Desert – We’ve got activities right at your Coachella AirBnB’s Doorstep
Part of what makes Coachella the experience it is – for me, anyway – is the crew I attend with. The group that assembles, whatever version of it shows up that year, becomes its own thing out in the desert. There’s a particular kind of bonding that happens when you’ve collectively been humbled by the music, the crowds, and the 2 AM scramble back to the Palm Springs house more than once.
If you’re organizing a group trip around Coachella and want to add something beyond the festival grounds, Bikes and Hikes LA offers custom group adventures in the Coachella Valley and greater desert region (Joshua Tree, too!) – and most people have no idea this is even an option.
Think desert terrain, mountain backdrops, Joshua Tree a short drive away, the San Jacinto Mountains rising dramatically off the valley floor.
Desert group adventures can include:
- Guided desert hikes near Palm Springs and the surrounding region
- Custom outdoor excursions for groups of 10 to 100+
- Full day and half day formats built around festival schedules
- Coordination for corporate retreats, DMC partners, and incentive travel groups
The valley between weekends hits differently when you’re out on a trail at sunrise instead of recovering poolside!
Want to Go Viral at Coachella? A Luxury Picnic Might Be Your Move
Let’s be honest, love it or hate it, content creation is part of Coachella’s culture now. The festival has always been a runway, a mood board, and a moment, and if you’re going to be in the Coachella Valley with a gorgeous desert backdrop and your most photogenic friends, you might as well make it count.
That’s where The Luxury Picnic Co. comes in. If you’re looking to seriously wow your Instagram feed – and do something genuinely memorable in the process – a luxury pop-up picnic setup is exactly what you need. Think: styled tablescapes, lush florals, curated decor, and the kind of aesthetic that looks like it took a full production team (it did, kind of – but you don’t have to lift a finger). Whether you’re at your Airbnb in Palm Springs, a rented desert estate, or one of the stunning outdoor spaces in the Coachella Valley, California area, The Luxury Picnic Co. will come to you and set the whole scene.
It’s the perfect pre festival activity for your crew, a birthday setup, a bachelorette moment, or honestly just a Tuesday when you want everything to look incredible. Coachella is about the experience – and a luxury picnic makes the experience look as good as it feels.
