DISCOVERING SAN DIEGO: SPOTLIGHT ON LA JOLLA

Ever dream of a place where you can snorkel with sea creatures, explore cool caves, and soak in some fascinating history? Well, grab your sunscreen (We recommend SPF 50!) and a sense of wonder because we’re diving into the gem of San Diego – La Jolla. From its storied past to its vibrant present, this spot is sure to please the fam.

A Stroll Through La Jolla’s History

Let’s kick things off with a little time travel. La Jolla, which means “the jewel” in Spanish, has been dazzling visitors and residents for centuries. Originally, the Kumeyaay people lived here, loving the coastal resources. Fast forward to the late 19th century, and La Jolla started transforming into a hotspot for artists, writers, and vacationers.

One of the most iconic historical spots is the La Valencia Hotel, aka “The Pink Lady of La Jolla.” Opened in 1926, this Mediterranean-style hotel has hosted Hollywood celebrities and dignitaries alike. Even today, it stands as a glamorous reminder of La Jolla’s swanky past.

The Spectacular La Jolla Cove

Now, let’s jump into the present – literally, if you’re up for some snorkeling! La Jolla Cove is famous for its clear waters and abundant marine life. Grab your snorkel gear and dive into an underwater paradise where you can swim with colorful fish, playful seals, and maybe even a friendly sea turtle.

If snorkeling isn’t your thing, no worries! You can kayak or paddleboard around the cove, or just enjoy the stunning views from the shore (just in case getting up close and personal with a seal isn’t your thing…). The dramatic cliffs and emerald waters make for some fantastic photo ops.

Exploring the Sea Caves

One of La Jolla’s hidden gems is its network of sea caves. There are seven caves in total, but the most famous is Sunny Jim Cave. You can access this cave through a man-made tunnel inside The Cave Store – the coolest shopping experience in San Diego! Once you’re in, you’ll be greeted with breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean crashing against the rocks. So. Cool.

Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography

For a deeper dive into marine science (If you’re a millennial, you PROBABLY wanted to be a marine biologist at SOME point during your childhood – We blame Free Willy!), head over to the Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. This world-renowned institution offers fascinating exhibits on ocean life, climate science, and conservation. The tide pool plaza is a hit with kids and adults alike – who doesn’t love getting up close and personal with sea stars and urchins? (Trust us, the whole fam will have have a great time!)
